I used underarmor when working in NH for heat and Ac companies in the dead cold on a roof and found them to be much more comfortable and warmer than standard long johns. For a cold ride, which i consider to be below 45, id also throw on my leathers, (lined jacket, chaps, full face helmet and full leather gloves) and im fine til about 30 degrees. (no windshield on bike either)

A good set of Lowers on your bike will reduce the amount of wind on your neck and face..

There's no substitute for a good windshield or fairing.
A full-face helmet with Fog City shield is a must. Underarmor is awesome, if you don't mind wearing it all day or change out of it. Aerostitch for a top layer. Electrics are great too, but if you have any distance to go, always have layers handy in case something fails. Some people use ski bibs or ski pants as a substitute for Stich, however, remember ski gear isn't usually crash worthy and often prone to melting on hot exhausts.

I have a short commute to work and slipping on this plexi screen means I'll ride till they spread salt.

Also, look at polypropelene long johns. Its what the military issued me, and you'll sweat to death if its not below 30. Its slightly bulkier than regular long johns, but not that expensive. They make boot liners out of it, too.

Ditto that.
For winter riding its my 99 Concours. Because of all the heat it produces it has some lower wind deflectors that are designed to blow air on you while riding. I switch them around so that they deflect the air out and untill it gets below 50 cold is not an issue. As long as the streets are clear I always do a January 1st ride. Last year it was 23 degrees and with a full face helmet a sweatshirt and leather on the top and long johns and chaps on the bottom I was able to get a hundred miles in. I also wear a cheap kids cotton clove as a liner under my First Gear gloves to keep the fingers alive.

Just got back from the dealer I ordered a windshield so should have it installed by the weekend. They had a real nice synthetic coat that was like a three in one from rain to cold could even take apart for warmer days, it's grey and black any of you seen it.Or have it.

Don't let your dealer screw you on the jacket, especially if you don't have to have the latest model. You can get a 4.0 from ebay for about 1/2 what the newest one will run you. I got mine for less than $60 shipped.
