Default fit over fashion

Ratings are the starting point and Motorcyclist did an awesome article debunking some of the cost myths and providing some explanation for the higher costs on helmets.

In the end, if it fits and fits well, buy it. If you are buying it for any other reason than fit, put it back.

Why do they cost so much?

Easy economics, Goofy people pay that much for them. IF no one bought them for that price they wouldn't be that price.

Personally, I think it's a very simple explanation if you go that route.

People want to believe that they are putting the safety of their head into good hands, and will pay extreme amounts to be able to say their head is as safe as technology can make it.

I'm kinda the same way. Is the safety of your head not worth $500? Mine is. If they cost $1,000, I'ld still buy them.

Planting your head into a good helmet is like buying a mercedes. Comfort, fit, and bragging rights.

Fair enough, but does more expensive equate with safer? I doubt it.

Anyway, I got the Scorpion and its awesome. I took it out for the first time time today and WOW! I'll put a review up in a bit.

Hehe, I didn't say it was a bad helmet, it just became uncomfortable to wear for me with my funky shaped noggin(my forhead is a bit pointed at the hair line, and the top of my head is a bit pointed), while the RF-1000 from shoei is probably the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn.

That being said, I was at the local shop, and tried on the other lines, RF-1100 and X-Eleven. They are a lot tighter than the RF-1000. It seems, the X-Eleven has longer, and a bit stiffer cheek pad than the RF-1000, and they put the same pad system in the RF-1100. It's tighter and a bit tougher to get on than the 1000. Should I decide to get a new helmet, I'll probably try out some other brands.

My 2 complaints about shoei is lack of anti fog face shield, and, at least on the RF-1000, a lot of air inside the face shield and across the eyes.

Right? WTF. That was one of my major sticking points. Anything in that price range should be fog free.

My head is more, shall we say Charlie Brown-esque, and the Scorpion is more comfortable than a ski-mask cut out of pantyho...err...nevermind. Its really comfy.

Ya, luckily for me, anti fog is a side note. I live in southern cali, so I only have to worry about a foggy shield for a few months out of the year. Cracking the shield when stopped is enough. I grabbed some Cat Crap(yes, that's the name) wax and that stops the majority of the fogging, so it's not an issue. 90% of my riding is spent under the hot sun.....

I'm not sure why, after "50 years of experience", they don't join the new Milenium tho....

So Shell size means nothing to you, weight means nothing to you, air flow and ventilation means nothing to you, quality and how well you can see through your shield means nothing to you. Does your helmet have collapsible compartments in the event of a crash that helps to save your life.

I guess you just stick a 5 pound helmet on your head if it feels good you are ready to go. It is really nice to hear all you experts that have never owned a decent helmet telling everyone what a waste of money a good helmet is..lol
