I was in a minor fender bender on my 2002 Honda Shadow vlx 600 CD. I will be getting some money from the insurance company and wanted to use some of it to buy new parts for my bike. I love it, but can always use more traction. The bike has spokes, so I have to use a tire with a tube, but I didn't know if I needed to get new tubes with new tires or if the ones that I currently have will continue to function for the life of the new tires. I also didn't know if I needed new flaps to go inside the tubes.
The factory back tire is: "TIRE (170/80-15) (170/80-15M/C 77S) (DUNLOP)" and the front tire is one of these:"TIRE (100/90-19) (100/90-19) (57S F24) (DUNLOP)" "TIRE (100/90-19) (DUNLOP) (100/90-19 M/C 57S F24)" I really don't know the difference. I sometimes ride in the rain and occasionally travel upwards of 4 hours roadtime on my bike. I wanted to get some really nice tires for these purposes, but didn't know where to start. I also need to have the front wheel/handlebars aligned and have no idea where I should go to get this and the tire installation done near Murray, KY. I want a professional job done, and I am willing to pay well for the right place. Any insight will be appreciated. Last edited by Steve-0; 11-04-2009 at 04:04 PM. |

First, always replace the tubes, cheap insurance.
For tires, prepare yourself when you start to price them, especially the rear. Luckily, there are some very reasonable alternatives, but remember, you do get what you pay for. Kenda makes a nice looking and decent performing tire, the K671, and the 170/80-15 is available for around $60.00 plus shipping, the matching front, 100/90-19 I believe, runs about $45.00 plus shipping. Tubes, figure another $40.00 for both, probably less. Google is your friend, says the ShortTimer. Google Kenda K671 and go to images, nice looking tires, you will not be disappointed. |

thanks a lot. I am willing to pay the price for a good tire and those look nice. I will replace the tires and the tubes, but should I replace the flaps inside the tubes too?

And if you have the money, go for a set of Avon's or Metzlers - you'll be around $500.00 by the time everything is said and done if you go that route. Me, I'd go with the Kenda's and use the money you saved for pipes and a jet kit, or a Harley. |

what brand of tube should I get...I was looking for some tubes that were made by kenda for those tires, but I didn't find any. Also, will generic 19 and 15 inch rim flaps fit my bike, or do I need to get certain ones?

Rim flaps? Are you talking about the rubber strip that covers the spoke nipples? I've never had a problem using duct tape for that.
