Default Have you ridden your motorcycle today?

Contributing Editor Allan Girdler blogs about "The Bikes Not Ridden," and asks, "What happened? Or more accurately, why didn't it happen?"

Have you ridden your motorcycle today?

Yes. Its my only transpo to work and back (I leave my ol' Caddi at the office in case I have to meet clients in inclimate weather). I only live 2 miles from my office but for some reason the trip home is 20-80 miles long.

I don't quite understand why folks buy bikes and let them sit but it is a bennefit for many of us. Earlier this season I bought a 86 XT350 with around 2000 miles on it. I doubled that in just a few months. What a deal.

One question though,,How did Allan get an '01 XLCH. Dude must have some connections. I've been wanting one for years.

Might be the point in life I'm in, but I ride to work almost every day but can hardly get out to take a proper ride during the weekend. I've barely managed to put 2000 miles on a year since I bought my current bike new just after my son was born. The dreaded Al Bundy married with children syndrome I guess. Seems weekends are for spending time with the family or working on the house...not riding motorcycles. I knew this might happen so I bought something with a little garage appeal, but it doesn't make up for actual riding. I'm one of the lucky ones though, most of my peers (mid 30s) either sold off their bikes, or never got around to getting one before they were married and are up a certain creek with out a paddle as far as getting one now.

I ride to work when the weather is good and I don't have to go somewhere during the day because whenever I go someplace, it involves a file box full of papers. This works out to maybe once or at best twice a week. I ride for errands that don't require cargo space. I also ride just for the heck of it.

I don't get the "garage queen" type either or the type that trailer their bikes instead of riding but at least it's not my money.

Riding a motorcycle to work isn't fun?????? I don't agree with that one. I've ridden to work on my motorcycle for many, many years and found it to be enjoyable.......even 9 years of a 70 mile daily commute on L.A. freeways.

Low mileage motorcycles? Some people do buy a motorcycle, ride for a few hundred or few thousand miles, and then the novelty wears off, or they realize that it may not be a long term form of transportation for them. And then said motorcycle languishes in the garage until one day they decide to sell it........and hey presto, someone gets a very low mileage motorcycle.

Others may have multiple bikes, and one doesn't get ridden as much as the others but also doesn't get sold, while the others come and go. Once again a low mileage motorcycle gets "preserved".

I think it's the exception rather than the norm for people to not ride their motorcycles, nor do I think it's a crime when they don't...................how else can we find that perfect, low mileage example of the bike we wished we'd bought all those years ago.

Since I got the day shift, (finally!) I've had to get to work and get home during rush hour...
I hate riding in heavy traffic. It's slow, people are tailgating, pre-occupied and distracted.
So, the bike stays in the garage until my days off.

Rush hour is the one situation that a GS is not at all suitable for.

I like riding to work. In the morning when I get off getting around traffic to get home is much easier on the bike than in the car. Nothing like using cars as rolling pylons. The weekends the group I ride with has a set time to meet for the weekend rides. Sometimes I go on Saturday's sometimes get up and go on Sunday. And this year I have taken 4 short out of town trips with the bike. Have more than likely gotten more seat time this year than any before. Life is good.

Almost every day, year around riding, all for pleasure, no commute, retired.

Riding to work is not that much fun but driving a car to work is even less fun.

People who don't ride their motorcycles? I guess I'm not one of those people.
