I floated an idea on the vintage bike racing forum a while back, just form an organization that conglomerates all sanctioning bodies' scoring systems on a spec equivalency basis, with weighting given for grid sizes and other criteria, (WERA produced a pretty good equivalency for the VMD/Mid-Ohio event).
Then, anyone can race anywhere they want, and can compete on a national level as well as whatever chosen series they are racing with. A nominal annual membership fee would go toward monitoring all of the series' event scoring, re-calculating each member's "nationalized" points, and distributing awards at years' end. My idea had a minimum number of events to be scored, with participation at 2 national events, and participation in a minimum of 3 different disciplines required for consideration of the #1 plate. Sponsorship opportunities, various smaller series national exposure, rider benefits and other stuff was all looked into. This has a big benefit of racers being able to race locally and regionally, unless trying to compete for the #1 plate, and still ending up with a somewhat realistic national ranking. The idea went over and died in the corner.
