<div>The original Pony Express Stables are here in St. Joe. Great tour, nicely restored. There is also a monument placed near downtown, possibly identical to the monument in old town Sacramento.</div><div> </div><div>The route shown is from the original stables to the old town monument.</div><div> </div><div>1668 miles on modern roads -</div><div> </div><div>1668 divided by 24 hours equals an average speed of about 70 MPH -</div><div> </div><div>Could be done, I admit I am not able for a variety of reasons, but it would make for a heck of a run.</div><div> </div><div>I would break it down into 3 days, myself . . . .</div>

<div></div><div>Looks like doing it in 24 would be, ummmm, extreme to say the least . . . .</div><div> </div><div>I think it would make a great addition to the Iron Butt rides (<em>Almost said Iron Butt <u><strong>runs</strong></u>, and it did not sound quite right</em>).</div><div> </div><div><a href="http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/" target="_blank">http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/</a></div><div> </div><div><a href="http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=3" target="_blank">http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=3</a><a href="http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=3" target="_blank"></a></div><p>Message Edited by Honda919Rider on <span class="date_text">01-25-2007</span><span class="time_text">07:58 AM</span></p>

<div>I like the idea of recreating historical journeys. On my list of things to do is retracing the route that Mark Twain took in the book "Roughing It" He ends up in Virginia City leaving from Hannibal MO. (Got to double-check this) The Lewis & Clark expedition would be a classic.</div><div> </div><div>In CA, there was an goverment sponsored expedition headed by William Brewer. California had just become a state & they wanted to see just what this place had.</div><div> </div><div>Sherman's March through Georgia is another. </div><div> </div><div>I'm hauling out the history books now.................</div>
The east end of the route is missing if one plans on following the old route as closely as possible. One would come west on US 36 to KS 148, then north to NE 8, then west to Fairbury, NE and then west from there on US 136, north on US 81 and work up toward Kearney, NE. That would recreate the old route as close as possible while staying on paved roads. At the very least, to honor the route, west on US 36 to US 81 and then to I-80.<br><br>Or, you could take the "real" roads that the Pony Express re-riders do each year! ;-)
