Hacksaw's comments in the "Tempo" contest, and ducbsa's quick response to the Norton prototype I just put up have got me thinking we need a way to prevent people from spoiling the fun for anyone who doesn't see these after they're first posted up.
I suggested to Fid that he PM me the answer so that others could play too. PMing the answer to the owner of the game would provide a time/datestamp that could ensure that they did indeed come up with it first, but keep the game going a little longer.

The person running the game need not reply to the PM's and any incorrect guesses could be copied and pasted into new posts so all can see them to keep people from making the same mistake that others have already made.
Then once all the regulars who hang out in the vintage section have had their try, the results could be posted up.
Replies in the original thread could discuss clues like features of the bike that might point to a particular country of origin, age of the bike, etc. If you're taking a wild guess, it's ok to post that in a reply, but just make it clear that it's a wild guess. If you're absolutely certain of the answer, PM it, don't post it in the original thread. If a guess happens to be the correct answer, and it was turned in first, that would qualify as the first correct answer.

I think I'll contact one of the forum admins to see if we could get a sticky topic with the rules in it.

Anyone have anything they'd like to add? Is this even a worthwhile idea?

I'd like to have some rules.
I think it's a good idea for people to not post an answer publicly if they're 100% sure. Spoils the fun for others who are trying to figure it out.

Carl, your suggested system sound good to me. We still won't be able to prevent independent verification of a guess (for instance, if Steve had said "that's absolutely right" instead of "I think we have a winner"), but it's a start and hopefully the general membership will like maintaining the suspense for 2-3 days. Nobody should expect to not miss all, though. I don't think we need 17 day whatzits just in case somebody's on vacation - not that anything like that has happened.

I think 3 days ought to be good enough. Most of us look in here at least that often.
And now that we don't have the distraction of flame wars in "general" to occupy our online time, maybe we'll all be here more often.

My popcorn franchise has already taken a serious nosedive!
