Slight correction: It is the "International Bike of the Year" as voted on by 15 magazines worldwide, including CW. Read about it in my January editorial, with complete comments from all magazines soon to be on the website.
Good choice.

Good choice. Was the new Ducati 1098 considered?

No, it was for 2006 models. Some early release next-year models were considered, but only if they were available in time for extended rides/testing. Harley-Davidsons, for example, which are typically released in the summer.
Unless Japan, Inc. releases something incredible I predict the 1098 will get next year's award. Possibly the new XR.

my vote for IBOY should be the 50th million version of the
Honda C50 scooter bike, sadly not available here in the west
but sold by the millions in other parts. same for the CB125 versions. It doesnt trigger the proverbial lustings but for sheer
utility... Honda is keeping true to the founders vision in keeping these bikes in production.
The marketing folks at Triumph must regret their decision to ditch the International Motorcycle Shows. They're missing a golden opportunity to showcase the Daytona 675. Bad move, Triumph!

For the Atlanta show our dealer usually sets up a booth with three or four bikes and several RAT members. So there is a presence, just not a big manufacturer's booth.

A dealer presence is better than nothing, which is what we had in Chicago last year.

Triumph is missing market exposure, media coverage, press interviews and the opportunity to solicit feedback on new and prospective (prototype) designs. What's more, think how Triumph could have showcased the Daytona 675 with signage stating "Cycle World's Bike of the Year".
Kudos to Triumph. After years of trying to compete with the Japanese 600cc sportbikes head-on and failing, Triumph decided to redefine the class altogether. Triumph finally realized that they couldn't beat the Japanese at there own game, so they changed the rules on how to build a better sportbike. In the process Triumph has created a truly remarkable motorcycle. Now it's time for the Japanese marques to play catch-up.

Hey, pat. Long time no see on the forums! Are you going to make it to the Wash. DC CW Int'l bike show next weekend? I'm planning on going down to the show Friday evening after work Let me know if you're going. Agreed, seeing a Triumph as the Int'l bike of the year is great, too bad they dropped out of the CW show circuit. Winchester Motosports had a small booth set up at the DC show last year, maybe they'll do the same this year.

Thor, not in the Int'l. Bike of the Year voting, which is a fairly new thing and heavily Euro-centric in magazine make up. Suzuki GSX-Rs have won a bunch, but then so did the BMW GS a couple of years ago. Harleys and Buells have received a small number of votes over the years.
All I need now is a way to get one past the wife. Think I could tell here it's just the old 77 XLCH with an aftermarket fairing?

The 1098 was one of the most popular bikes at the Chicago IMS show last weekend. Unfortunately, Ducati had an unusual fortress-like exhibit. There was a single entrance with a receptionist desk in the middle. Because of the crowded entrance, many people couldn't get in to see the bikes. As I watched this mess I somehow wondered if Pierre Terreblanche was responsible.

Triumph was noticeably absent, and there was no local dealer presence. The only Triumphs I saw were vintage models owned by a local Brit bike club. As I said before, Triumph's North America marketing plan is missing the mark. Oh well, perhaps they'll use their trade show budget to buy more print ads.

Message Edited by Geoff on 02-13-200704:51 PM
