I own a 1988 ZX-10 Ninja. 21000 miles on bike, never dropped, just painted House of colors Kandy Apple Red.

I've began tuning this bike a bit, and I started by installing a full MUZZYS system, K&N velocity stacks, Dyno jet Kit stage three main jets and needles etc. kit came with 155 main jets, currantly using 162 jets. I have also installed a "Factory" Brand 4 Degree timing rotor, and very recently have installed 2 larger cams. I perform most of the work myself to an extent with advise from a very reliable friend as well. I am in the process of putting in a Vesrah Clutch and spring kit, only because my stock clutch is worn out. Theses bikes are very heavy by todays standards, but I really love mine for the ocassional trip up the coast. ( I modify it because I hate being left behind when a young kid pulls up on a new 600 and races by) Anyway, my question is, I have spent lots of money over this past summer and recently to tune this 500lb grumpy dinosaur, the bike has been very reliable and I've put the majority of the miles on it all with no problems. I see alot of new bikes advertising 150+ HP ex: ZX-10 and I realize these are now fuel injected machines as well, but other than being lighter, are these new machines really faster?? If so, would it be benificial to upgrade newer, I like to ride hard and fast but I also like to two up ride and travel upwards of 500-1000 miles occasionally, which makes my old 10 great. What are your thoughts on the ZX-12R, maybe even an older YZF-1000R for this type of riding. This question is turning into a book now so I will stop now, Thanks guys, long time subscriber, long time rider.
My observation; Seems like some people like to tinker a lot. Squeeze everything out of a lump that they can. However, if you're serious, I think you need to bite the bullet and get something newer/bigger. I've seen a lot of people doing that with BMWs- even with the older 650s. I think it's fun for them, but if you want to get serious about speed, newer/bigger/lighter all adds up.
One thing that struck me, however, is maybe you need to ride your own ride, so to speak. ?

Lemme tell ya.......... I've put several miles on an 06........ for some reason I thought it was an 05......... GSXR 1000

is it really faster?

you better believe it is and faster, in this case, the mere word faster is such an understatement........ it's like the difference between normal transport and beam me up Scotty

my gawd it's totally insane... it's 366 pounds of nearly 180 horsepower that pulls hard from the basement to the attic....... will embarass your heavyweight zipper bike and it would be about like an aeronautical dog fight between a prop plane from WWII against say an F16 being fed steroids and crystal meth

I laughed my ass off at a kid on a 03 GSXR750 when he told me it would run with the 1000 I was on......... he was so very wrong even though he had done quite a bit of work to his........ I was reasonably sure even if he had nitrous he'd blow the motor if he held it long enough to get away from it's wicked descendant....... wasn't even close and he spent enough on his bike and goodies to have bought the real bad boy and still have change leftover....... and all wrench time left free to go romp on kids like himself that hadn't seen the light

you like the bike? keep it. you wanna go really faster...... straddle one of these new space ships

........ CW...... I'll be expecting my commission check and had you not removed the GSXR feature off the home page...... I'd have linked it up and drawn this gent's attention to the part where you guys said....... these bikes are already so fast they have to race against themselves.....
my two friends have summed up the the answer that you desire in such eloquent terms.....if you are unhappy riding this bike ride a newer bike. the new ones are really that much faster...quicker ...lighter and fun to ride. I agree with unka ernie RIDE YOUR OWN BIKE

Ride your own RIDE means know your limits. Don't try to keep up with someone else. you don't kow if they're really skilled, or just stupid. Either way, riding beyond your skill and/or comfort level is a good way to get hurt.

The fuel injection alone is worth the switch. I had an 89 GSXR 750, then bought a VFR 800. In this case the GSXR was a tick faster that the VFR, but the VFR was a much nicer machine to ride. If you compare your 10 to a new Busa or somthing along those lines it is a whole different ballgame. I drag raced a guy on a first gen ZX 11 and beat him by two tenths of a second in the 1/4 mile on my VFR. I though for sure he would have won (I do not know his skill level). We both ran high 11 seconds @ around 120 ish MPH. I raced by buddies Busa at the same track the next year and ran a 10.50 @ 138 MPH, and I am not a good drag racer. I hope this helps with your question. Also the brakes, and suspention on the newer bikes are sick. I am riding a 05 CBR 1000 now and would not trade it for anything.
