How do I get the back wheel off of a shaft driven bike? I am changing the rear rotor on an '83 GL1100a, and have a cylmer manual, which shows how to do it on another model, the interstate i think...<BR>

Does the hub/end of the drive shaft come off too?<BR>

I have not done your specific bike, but everything I know tells me the job is pretty screw-up proof as long as:<BR>
1. Your bike is securely off the ground high enough to get the tire out from underneath.<BR>
2. As you remove the tire,insert a small rubber hose, the thickness of your brake rotor, to hold your brake pads in place.<BR>
3. Check and order new brake pads, as needed, before removing your tire.<BR>
4. Lay all greasy parts on a paper towel, so you do not contaminate anything when you reassemble...<BR>

Not many on the forum right now, so you may want to resubmit your question, at a busier time... We got some really good mechanics on board, during the day...<BR>

I've only done BMWs, but it should be about the same...<BR>
First, aqssuming you don't have a centerstand, can you get a scissor jack underneath and get the rear end up high? If not, you need to figure out how to get the bike up while on the sidestand. UP. You may need to remove a muffler. You'll probably have a big nut on one side and just a pinch bolt on the other. Hopefully there's a hole in the unthreaded end of the axle to put a phillips head through.<BR>
Take off the big nut and loosen the pinch bolt. Using the phillips head, twist the axle as you pull it out. (you may want to have the wheel blocked up in case it follows the axle out and falls down) Remember to clean the axle and coat it lightly with grease before putting it back in later. You need to work the wheel lose and slide it out and under the bike at an angle. If the bike is too low or the muffler is in the way, or what ever, your sunk. Don't wad up your brake while doing this- you should have room to work.<BR>
Use good grease or anti-sieze on the splines before putting the wheel back in.<BR>
Now you know why a lot of folks would rather take the bike to a shop for a tire change.<BR>

I have a shaft drive Honda ST1300 and one side of the wheel is slotted and the slots fit into corresponding slots in the shaft drive third member. I have to remove the rear brake caliper first, then slide the axle out. There is a spacer opposite the slotted side of the wheel, once the axle is removed the spacer falls out. Once the spacer is out, this gives room to slide the wheel sideways and disengage the slotted parts, them pull the wheel straight back.
